The Transforming Lives Through Nutrition initiative in Kapilvastu delivers evidence-based nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions to pregnant women, infants, and young children in low-resource settings, with collaboration and strong local ownership at its core. By aligning tailored packages of interventions with local contexts and needs, the program promotes sustainable impact and resilience through strategies such as breastfeeding promotion, improved complementary feeding practices, and implementation of the Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) protocol and the Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (MBFHI) at health facilities. It emphasizes capacity building of health workers and Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) for community-based screening, referrals, and treatment, while strengthening local systems for nutritional support, data collection, and reporting. Complementing these health-focused efforts, the project integrates nutrition-sensitive agriculture, climate-smart production systems, and WASH interventions to address underlying determinants of malnutrition. Vulnerable households have been supported with nutrient-dense seasonal vegetable seeds to improve dietary diversity and food security, while Community Learning Centres in Mayadevi and Bijaynagar serve as “see and learn” platforms showcasing technologies like Integrated Pest Management, drip irrigation, and vermicomposting. The initiative also promotes agroecology, local enterprise development, and strengthens last-mile supply chains by training Community Business Facilitators and linking them with private agri-input suppliers, ensuring reliable access to quality agricultural inputs. Overall, this integrated, multi-sectoral approach enhances community capacity, fosters resilience, and improves the nutritional status of women and children from pregnancy through the first five years of life.
